Susan Healy and Jim Shine attended this year’s Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM), held in Basel, Switzerland, on 22-24 October. Jointly organised by the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA) and FiBL, ABIM is the premiere meeting place for the biocontrol industry. This 3-day event was the 13th such meeting.
The Congress Center Basel played host to some 80 exhibitors and over 1,100 delegates, a record attendance for ABIM. The keynote speakers were Hans Dreyer, director of the Plant Protection and Production Division of the FAO, and Russell Blair, CEO of Andermatt USA. Eight plenary sessions offered insights into the current state of play in biocontrol, including regulatory issues, new technologies, and professional-group talks on macrobials, natural substances, semiochemicals and microbials. Overall, the meeting showcased a continuously growing industry where innovation is key, but which is not always appropriately supported by current regulatory approaches.
Next year’s ABIM is scheduled for 21-23 October 2019, again in Basel.
